Post written by Jane Hunt, former inaugural CEO at Fitted for Work.

My son recently went to our local library to hear the author John Marsden speak. He has started the ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’ series and is captivated by the world John Marsden has created.

My son came home from the talk glowing, and, in a rare moment of emotion for a twelve year old boy, said John Marsden was the most inspiring person he had ever met. When I asked him about this he went on to explain that John Marsden had shared with the group both his love for the craft of writing, but also the techniques on how to make writing interesting and engaging.

My son said, ‘I can do this Mama, I can write’.

In that moment I saw and felt the shift in him, the exploding self-belief and the opening up of possibilities. It is the same shift we are privileged to be part of with the young people we see at Fitted for Work. What my son experienced with John Marsden is what we do at Fitted for Work: motivate, inspire and share the nuts and bolts of how to get a job.

My son’s experience reminded me that all young people should have these moments – where they believe in their capacity to do things they want to.
